Akai MFC42
The MFC42 is a true analog filter module designed by Akai for their MPC-series gear. However, you can use it to process any sound source since it has basic 1/4" inputs and outputs and MIDI! It has genuine analog filters for that warmer tone with Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, and Notch filter types. It consists of a MONO filter section and STEREO filter section. The MONO section offers 2-, 4-, and 8-pole filter slopes. The STEREO section offers 2- and 4-pole filter slopes. The MONO 8-pole slope utilizes the whole filter circuitry so the STEREO section is not active. Likewise, the MONO section is inactive when the STEREO section is in 4-pole mode. But when both sections are used simultaneously, they can be linked so that the MONO filter's control knobs control both MONO and STEREO sections. The link can also be inverted so the two sections sweep in opposite directions.

sE Electronics Z-5600
The SE Electronics Z5600 is a tube capacitor (condenser) microphone with an amazingly low price tag. It comes with a suspension mount and an external power supply. (Some of those high-end European manufacturers make you pay extra for the suspension mount - as much as a good mic sometimes!). Tube microphones generally do need external power supplies; those that can run from phantom power are rare. However, this type of mic will most likely only ever be used in a studio, rather than for live work or location recording, so it doesn't really matter. One interesting feature is that even though this mic is quite low in cost, it offers multiple patterns all the way from omnidirectional to figure-of-eight with more intermediate stages than you would expect. These are selected on the power supply rather than on the microphone. As a tube mic, you would expect a more 'present' sound than a transistor microphone. Combined with the large diaphragm, this will give an upfront, quite in-your-face sound quality. You should also expect a little more noise, but as the typical usage would be close to the sound source you should not find this a problem.

In fact, the folks over at KuSh Audio loved theirs so much, they thought it'd be fun to find a way to tweak it to add even more features to their already-favorite character compressor. Meet the UBK FATSO. The goal behind the UBK FATSO was this: find a way to create a collection of fixed-setting compressors that could all around just get the job done, no matter the source. Beyond that, each preset compressor had to have its own distinct flavor and vibe so engineers would have the right palette of colors and "grab" at the ready, no matter what challenges a session presented. They succeeded. In addition to all the tone-sweetening characteristics you'll find on the classic FATSO (which is at the heart of this hot-rodded version), the UBK FATSO add three brand-new presents, meticulously crafted and tuned by ear. You've got "Splat," an API console-inspired compression setting that can enhance anything but really takes vocals and electric guitars to a thick, creamy edge when you dig into it. Up next is the "Smooth" setting - essentially classic limiting with a special twist. The goal was to make a "tracking-style" limiter that helped you, the engineer, shave around 6-10dB off the peaks, without sounding like too much happened - just an all-around sweetness and better-behaving tracks. With your tracks through this setting, you'll find you need less EQ and compression; things just fit. But go on and abuse the setting to more-than-pleasant musical results. Finally, there's the "Glue" setting. Put any earth-shakingly low source through this setting, and you won't believe it. The bass locks into place. It sounds clean, clear, and loud without getting in the way of the rest of your mix. Your bass, in a word, is "glue." It just sticks right where it needs to be. Of course, you'll be happy with it on a bunch of other instruments.

Yamaha NS10M
The standard nearfield studio monitor in the music industry among rock and pop recording engineers. Launched in 1978, the NS-10 started life as a bookshelf speaker destined for the domestic environment. It was poorly received but eventually became a valuable tool with which to mix rock recordings. The speaker has a characteristic white-coloured mid?bass drive unit. Technically, it is known as a speaker that easily reveals poor quality in recordings. Recording engineers sought to dull its treble response by hanging tissue paper in front of it, resulting in what became known as the tissue paper effect, a type of comb filtering.
