Alesis Midiverb III

The latest instalment in Alesis' classic effects series, the MIDIverb III, is something of a cross between an upgraded MIDIverb II and a cut-down Quadraverb - it includes four effects sections which can be used simultaneously, but doesn't quite have the power or flexibility to stand on a par with the Quadraverb. On the other hand, it is fully programmable and offers more effects facilities than the MIDIverb II, and is therefore a major step forward in this respect. The MIDIverb III comes in a standard 19" rackmount case, and is supplied with an external power supply. There is no power switch, so you either have to switch power off at the mains or pull out the adapter plug if you want to turn the unit off. The front panel sports three knobs, for Input, Output and Mix levels. These are global controls, determining levels for all effects Programs. Next to these are Signal and Clip LEDs, and a three-digit LED display.

Unlike many Aural Exciters or equalizers, the BBE Maxie does not add any extra noise or harmonics to your sound. This means that you won't be adding future problems in duplication or mastering of your music caused by aberrant high frequency distortion. The BBE Maxie is a dual channel enhancer designed to operate with -10dBu levels. The Little Labs PCP Instrument Distro 3.0 is an all-in-one triple transformer-isolated guitar splitter, triple output/input re-amping tool, active line-level direct box, and long guitar cable driver. Re-amp inputs and instrument inputs are selectable and sum together for each output. Each output has a selectable polarity, earth lift, and level control. The PCPs' functionality has not changed in the 26 years it has been in production, but the internal electronics have been revised and improved. The name PCP was a joke in 1997 at A&M Studios, where I developed the first "Professional to Cheesy Pedal" distro; the name does not tell the whole story.

The SE Electronics Z5600 is a tube capacitor (condenser) microphone with an amazingly low price tag. It comes with a suspension mount and an external power supply. (Some of those high-end European manufacturers make you pay extra for the suspension mount - as much as a good mic sometimes!). Tube microphones generally do need external power supplies; those that can run from phantom power are rare. However, this type of mic will most likely only ever be used in a studio, rather than for live work or location recording, so it doesn't really matter. One interesting feature is that even though this mic is quite low in cost, it offers multiple patterns all the way from omnidirectional to figure-of-eight with more intermediate stages than you would expect. These are selected on the power supply rather than on the microphone. As a tube mic, you would expect a more 'present' sound than a transistor microphone. Combined with the large diaphragm, this will give an upfront, quite in-your-face sound quality. You should also expect a little more noise, but as the typical usage would be close to the sound source you should not find this a problem.
